The Church Year

The Church year commences with the first Sunday of Advent, usually early in December. Each year the same pattern of major themes in the life of the Church is celebrated by worshipping communities of mainstream Churches around the world.

Advent

This is our special time of preparation for the Christmass. Each week in Advent sees the lighting of another candle on the advent wreath to signify such as aspects as Hope, Love Peace and Joy in the coming of the Christ child. The liturgical colour is violet.

Christmass (Not a misspelling)

A service of Nine Lessons and Carols is held during Advent leading up to Christmass. The Christmass period involves the children in a special Eucharist where they are involved in an interactive manner. This service occurs at 6.00pm on Christmass Eve. The midnight mass referred to as the ‘Christ-mass’ begins at 11.00pm, preceded by Carol singing from 10.30pm. On Christmass day Eucharist is 8.30am.

Lent

This period of the Church Calendar of 40 days before Easter prepares us for the Holy Week and the Easter celebration. This period begins with Ash Wednesday services with the imposition of ashes. Reflective study groups form during this period.

Holy Week

Palm Sunday sees the beginning of Holy Week with our celebrations of the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Palm leaves adorn the Church and individuals receive palm crosses. The week continues with daily celebrations of the Eucharist. Maundy Thursday, includes a mass and foot washing and stripping of the altar and the commencement of a watch until 11.00pm. Good Friday sees the recommencement of the watch and the Main Liturgy at 9.00am, including the reading of the passion, the veneration of the cross, and Holy Communion followed by devotions.

Easter

Lent and Holy Week culminate in the victory of Jesus over death. The lighting of the new fire, symbolizing new life, coming from the darkness of death, the paschal proclamation and the renewal of baptismal vows and Eucharist followed by a festive supper in the hall make up the essential components of our Easter Vigil. A celebration of the resurrection also occurs at the Eucharist on Easter Sunday at 8.30am.

Sundays after Pentecost and Epiphany

These normal Sundays have readings from the scriptures set on a three year cycle, which the Anglican Church shares with most other Churches. In Year A, the Gospel readings are mainly from Matthew, in Year B they are from Mark, and in Year C they are from Luke. John's Gospel is read across the three years.

Saints Days

Significant foundation figures in the life of the Church from earliest times through to the present day are remembered and celebrated in the worshipping life of the Church. Many of our Schools Parishes, Hospitals and people bear these important names.

All Saints Patronal Festival

Our All Saints Day is on the first Sunday after 1st November each year. We celebrate at the Eucharist with special activities and a barbq afterwards, in the courtyard. There are usually special arrangements each year.
